Botox for Excessive Sweating: How It Treats Hyperhidrosis

Key takeaways
- Hyperhidrosis treatment Maldives with botulinum toxin can dramatically reduce excessive underarm sweating that does not respond to strong antiperspirants.
- Small injections temporarily block the nerve signals that switch on sweat glands in the treated area.
- Results typically last several months, after which the treatment can be repeated.
- It is especially relevant in our hot, humid climate, where excessive sweating can be genuinely distressing.
- A proper assessment first rules out other causes and confirms it is the right approach.
Hyperhidrosis treatment Maldives is worth knowing about if you sweat far more than you need to – soaking through shirts, avoiding certain clothes, or feeling self-conscious despite good hygiene. In this guide we explain how botulinum toxin helps, who it suits, and what to expect. To book or ask about cost, see hyperhidrosis treatment in the Maldives with Dr. Alaa Zidan in Hulhumalé.
Living so close to the equator, our patients deal with heat and humidity almost every day of the year, and that alone makes ordinary sweating heavier than in cooler climates. Genuine hyperhidrosis is a different problem again – sweating that carries on regardless of temperature or activity – and it is common enough here that we see it at the clinic year-round rather than only in the hotter months.

What hyperhidrosis is
Hyperhidrosis means sweating beyond what the body needs to control temperature. Primary hyperhidrosis, most commonly of the underarms, hands or feet, is not caused by heat or exertion alone and often runs in families, usually starting in childhood or adolescence and continuing into adult life. Secondary hyperhidrosis, by contrast, is triggered by an underlying condition or medication, tends to be more widespread over the body, and needs its own diagnostic route rather than localised treatment. It can affect clothing choices, confidence and daily comfort – and in a hot, humid environment like the Maldives, it can feel especially difficult.
Hyperhidrosis Treatment Maldives: How Botulinum Toxin Helps
Sweat glands are switched on by nerve signals using a chemical messenger. Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks that messenger in the treated area, so the sweat glands there produce much less sweat. For underarm (axillary) sweating in particular, this is a well-studied and effective approach, with trials and reviews showing significant, lasting reductions in sweating.
The treatment uses the same medicine as our cosmetic Botox, applied for a very different, medical purpose.
Who it suits
It suits people with troublesome excessive sweating – most commonly underarm – that has not been controlled by strong antiperspirants, and who want reliable relief. Before treating, we take a history to make sure the sweating is not a sign of another condition that needs different care.
It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions. We will discuss all of this at your consultation.

What treatment involves
After mapping the area, a series of small injections is placed just under the skin across the affected region. The underarms are usually very manageable; hands and feet can be more sensitive and numbing options are considered. The appointment is short, with little to no downtime, so most patients go straight back to their day afterwards. Sweating usually reduces within a week or so as the effect builds.
Results and expectations
Most people enjoy several months of markedly reduced sweating, after which the treatment can be repeated to maintain the effect. It reduces sweating in the treated area specifically, so we plan treatment around the areas that trouble you most. Because heat and humidity here make any residual sweating more noticeable day to day, many patients find it worth timing their repeat sessions a little ahead of the hottest, most humid months rather than waiting until sweating has become bothersome again.
Alternatives to consider
Prescription-strength aluminium chloride antiperspirants are usually the first step for milder cases and are worth trying properly before moving on. For more resistant sweating, options beyond botulinum toxin include iontophoresis (mainly for hands and feet) and, for severe, treatment-resistant cases, surgical approaches. We discuss the full range honestly at consultation, including when a simpler option is genuinely enough and botulinum toxin is not needed at all.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it last?
Typically several months for underarm treatment, after which it can be repeated. Duration varies between people.
Will I sweat more elsewhere?
The treatment reduces sweating in the treated area. Some people notice normal compensatory sweating elsewhere, which we will discuss honestly beforehand.
Does it hurt?
Underarm injections are usually very tolerable. For more sensitive areas such as the palms, we consider numbing to keep you comfortable.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Most people notice sweating easing within about a week, with the fullest effect visible over the following couple of weeks.
Can I combine it with antiperspirants?
Yes. Many patients continue using an antiperspirant for extra reassurance, particularly in the first weeks while the effect is still building.
