Tinted Sunscreen for Melasma: What a New Study Found

If you have melasma, a new study offers a practical takeaway: a tinted sunscreen for melasma may protect the skin better than a standard, untinted one. Both prevented sun-driven darkening, but the tinted version, which adds protection against visible light, produced more even skin tone after five months.
What the tinted sunscreen for melasma study found
Researchers ran a randomised, investigator-blinded trial in 42 women with melasma over a summer. Half used a high-protection sunscreen with visible-light filters (iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide); half used a similar sunscreen with the same UV protection but no visible-light filters. Both groups stayed stable or slightly lightened, confirming that daily broad-spectrum sunscreen prevents relapse. Only the tinted group, though, significantly improved the colour match between melasma patches and surrounding skin.
When and where it was published
The letter appeared in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025, from a French research team. It supports existing international expert guidance to use broad-spectrum tinted sunscreens year-round for melasma.
How strong is the evidence, and what it does not prove
This is a small, single-centre study funded by a sunscreen manufacturer, so it is a useful signal rather than the final word. It does not prove tinted sunscreen clears melasma on its own, and the overall severity score (mMASI) improved similarly in both groups. Melasma is stubborn and tends to relapse, so sunscreen is one part of a plan, not a cure.
Why this matters for Maldivian skin

Melasma is common in medium to deeper skin tones and is easily triggered by strong sun and visible light – exactly the conditions we live with here. A well-formulated tinted sunscreen is a simple, evidence-based step. We often combine daily photoprotection with in-clinic care through our pigmentation and melasma treatment, and you can read more on why pigmentation and melasma are more common in the Maldives.

Frequently asked questions
Why does tinted sunscreen matter for melasma?
Untinted mineral and chemical sunscreens block UV rays well but do not fully block visible light, which is a known trigger for melasma. Iron-oxide tinted formulas add that extra layer of protection.
How much sunscreen should I apply daily?
Most dermatologists recommend a generous, even layer covering the whole face each morning, reapplied through the day if you are outdoors in strong sun.
Can tinted sunscreen replace melasma treatment?
No. It is an important daily habit alongside treatment, not a substitute for a targeted plan such as a chemical peel, topical regimen or laser approach.
