Dermal Fillers Explained: Cheeks, Jawline, Chin and Under-Eyes

Dermal Fillers Explained: Cheeks, Jawline, Chin and Under-Eyes

Dermal fillers do more than plump lips. Used well, they restore volume that changes with age, balance facial proportions, and soften specific areas of concern – cheeks, jawline, chin, temples and under-eyes are all treated with different filler techniques and different goals.

In the strong overhead daylight common in the Maldives, volume loss in the cheeks and under-eyes tends to cast more shadow, which is often when patients first notice it.

What dermal fillers actually do

Most fillers used today are hyaluronic acid based – a substance naturally present in skin – which adds volume, structure or hydration depending on the product and technique. As we age, we lose facial volume gradually rather than just developing lines, and filler addresses that volume loss directly, which is a different job from what Botox does.

Common areas treated

Cheeks

Restores the mid-face volume that supports the lower face, often softening nasolabial folds indirectly without needing to treat them directly.

Jawline and chin

Defines and balances jaw contour and chin projection – a popular request from patients wanting a more defined profile without surgery.

Under-eye hollows

A more technical area requiring a conservative, experienced hand, since overfilling here is one of the most visible filler mistakes.

Temples

Often overlooked, but temple hollowing changes the whole upper face and is increasingly treated as part of a balanced plan rather than in isolation.

How a filler plan is actually built

Every plan starts with an assessment of your facial proportions, not a generic filler package. Some patients need one area addressed, others benefit from a small amount spread across two or three areas for a more balanced result. Restraint matters here – the goal is a rested, natural look, not visible volume.

How long results last

Most hyaluronic acid fillers last nine to eighteen months depending on the area, the product and your metabolism. Areas with more movement, like lips, tend to soften faster than structural areas like cheeks or jawline.

Frequently asked questions

Do dermal fillers look obvious?

Not when dosed conservatively and placed correctly. Overfilling is what creates an obvious or unnatural look, which is why treatment planning and restraint matter more than the product itself.

What is the difference between filler and Botox?

Botox relaxes muscles that cause expression lines. Filler adds volume or structure. Many patients use both, in different areas, as part of one plan.

Are fillers reversible?

Most hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed, which is one reason they remain the most commonly used filler type.

Is there downtime after filler?

Mild swelling or bruising is possible for a few days. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

How do I know which areas I actually need?

That is exactly what the consultation is for – a facial assessment first, product and technique decided second.
