Laser Hair Removal: What to Know Before You Book
Laser energy targeted at hair follicles to progressively reduce hair growth over a course of sessions.
Who it’s for
Anyone wanting a longer-term reduction in unwanted hair, on the face or body, rather than ongoing shaving or waxing.
What to expect at your visit
A course of sessions spaced several weeks apart, following the natural hair growth cycle, results build progressively, not in one visit.
What results look like over time
Results build progressively across a course of sessions, following the natural hair growth cycle, most patients need 6-8 sessions spaced several weeks apart for a lasting reduction.
Downtime & aftercare
Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area before and after sessions, and skip other hair-removal methods (waxing, plucking) between visits.
How to prepare for your visit
Shave (not wax or pluck) the treatment area the day before your appointment, and avoid sun exposure and self-tanning for two weeks beforehand.
Often paired with
A standalone course of treatment, best planned around avoiding sun exposure on the treated area throughout.
Who might want to wait
If you have very light or grey hair, laser is generally less effective since it targets pigment in the hair follicle, and Dr. Alaa will discuss this honestly before you commit to a course.
“Is one session enough for permanent removal?”
No single session catches every hair, since hair grows in cycles. A full course is what achieves lasting reduction, not one visit.
What Recovery and Results Look Like
Because laser hair removal only affects hair in its active growth phase, and not all hairs are in that phase at once, this is always a course of treatment, typically 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, never a single-session fix, regardless of what is advertised elsewhere. Mild redness and slight follicle swelling for a few hours after each session is normal, similar to a light razor rash. Shaving, not waxing or plucking, is fine between sessions and actually recommended, since the follicle needs to remain intact for the laser to target it effectively. You will typically see progressively finer, sparser regrowth after each session rather than a dramatic change after the first. Strict sun avoidance and SPF on treated areas is essential throughout the course, since tanned or sun-exposed skin significantly increases the risk of pigmentation changes, a particularly important consideration given how much sun exposure is part of daily life in the Maldives.

Guide FAQ
Why do I need so many sessions?
Laser only affects hair in its active growth phase, and not all hairs are in that phase at the same time, hence the spaced-out course.
Does this work on all hair and skin tones?
Effectiveness varies with hair and skin tone combinations, assessed and explained honestly at your consultation.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, shaving is fine and recommended between sessions; it is waxing and plucking that should be avoided since they remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
Does this work on tanned skin?
Recently tanned skin increases risk of pigment changes, so sessions are usually timed around avoiding significant sun exposure beforehand.
