Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid

Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid

Key takeaways

  • Good lip filler aftercare mostly means keeping things calm and clean for a day or two while swelling and any bruising settle.
  • Expect the most swelling on day one; it usually eases noticeably by days three to four, with bruising fading over about a week.
  • Use a cold compress gently, sleep with your head slightly raised, and avoid heat, strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Avoid pressing or massaging the lips and skip make-up on them for the first day to lower the small risk of infection.
  • Contact us promptly for severe or increasing pain, blanching, or a dusky colour change, which are rare but need urgent review.
  • Tell us beforehand if you get cold sores, as treatment can trigger a flare.

Lip filler aftercare is the short, simple routine you follow in the first days after hyaluronic acid lip enhancement to keep swelling and bruising to a minimum and let your lips settle into a natural result. Most people are back to normal activities quickly, and there is very little you need to do – but a few sensible steps genuinely help comfort and healing. Here is the guidance we give our own patients.

Before we begin, our overview of lip filler explains the treatment itself, and you may also find our guides to natural lip filler in the Maldives and how long lip filler lasts helpful.

What to expect in the first few days

Some swelling, tenderness and occasional bruising are normal after lip filler, because the lips have a rich blood supply and are naturally mobile. Swelling is usually at its peak on the first day, eases noticeably by days three to four, and any bruising typically fades within about a week. Lips can feel firm or slightly lumpy at first; this generally smooths out as the product settles over one to two weeks. The final look is best judged after this settling period, not on day one.

Lip filler aftercare: what to do

Cool and soothe gently

Apply a clean, wrapped cold compress to the lips for short spells over the first 24 to 48 hours to ease swelling and bruising. Keep the pressure light – the aim is to cool, not to squash the filler.

Keep your head up

Sleep with your head slightly elevated on the first night or two, which helps reduce overnight swelling.

Stay hydrated and eat gently

Drink water and choose soft, non-messy foods for the first day so you are not pressing hard on the lips. Sip rather than using straws if it feels more comfortable.

Keep the area clean

Leave the lips alone with clean hands only, and let any tiny injection points settle on their own.

What to avoid after lip filler

Heat and strenuous exercise

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid vigorous workouts, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and very hot showers. Heat and raised blood flow widen blood vessels and can worsen swelling and bruising – worth planning around if a resort sauna or a beach run is part of your day.

Pressing, massaging and make-up

Do not rub or massage your lips unless we specifically ask you to, as this can move freshly placed filler. Skip lipstick and lip products on the first day to keep the area clean.

Alcohol and blood thinners

Alcohol and blood-thinning agents such as aspirin, high-dose fish oil and vitamin E can increase bruising, so it is sensible to avoid alcohol for the first day or two and to discuss any regular medicines with us in advance.

Dental work and other procedures

Where possible, leave a couple of weeks between lip filler and dental treatment or other injectable procedures, as this lowers the small risk of introducing infection.

Aftercare in the Maldives: heat, sun and swimming

The warm Maldivian climate is worth factoring into your aftercare. Intense heat, midday sun, hot yoga and saunas can all add to swelling in the first day or two, so it is best to keep cool and take it easy immediately after treatment. Pools, the sea and hot tubs are best left for a few days while any tiny injection points close. Gentle sun protection and shade help you stay comfortable while your lips settle.

Relaxing in cool shade, which supports lip filler aftercare in the Maldivian heat
Keeping cool and out of intense heat in the first day or two supports comfortable lip filler aftercare in the Maldives.

When to seek advice

Serious problems after lip filler are rare, but it is important to know the warning signs. Contact us promptly if you have severe or increasing pain that seems out of proportion, blanching (sudden whiteness) of the skin, a dusky or grey-blue colour change, or spreading pain – these can signal a vascular problem that needs urgent attention. Also let us know about a fever, spreading redness or pus, which can suggest infection. If you have a history of cold sores, tell us beforehand, as treatment can occasionally trigger a flare that may need preventive medication.

If you are unsure about anything during your recovery, you are welcome to message our clinic on WhatsApp and we will be glad to help.
