Fractional Laser: What to Know Before You Book

A laser that treats the skin in a controlled fractional pattern, improving texture, fine lines, and scarring while leaving surrounding skin intact to speed healing.

Who it’s for

People with more established texture concerns, acne scarring, fine lines, sun damage, wanting a deeper result than a peel or microneedling alone.

What to expect at your visit

Downtime is more noticeable than surface treatments: redness and mild swelling for several days, sometimes with light peeling.

What results look like over time

Redness and mild swelling for several days, sometimes with light peeling, with texture and scarring improvements developing over the following weeks and often needing more than one session.

Downtime & aftercare

Diligent SPF and gentle skincare for at least two weeks afterward; sun protection directly affects how well results hold.

How to prepare for your visit

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products for at least two weeks before treatment, and stop retinoids a few days prior as advised.

Often paired with

Usually planned as its own course rather than combined with other active treatments in the same week, to let the skin recover fully between sessions.

Who might want to wait

If you have very dark skin tones or active infections in the treatment area, extra caution or an alternative approach may be recommended to avoid pigment-related complications.

Common Myth

“Is this the same as a light resurfacing treatment?”

No, it goes deeper than surface treatments like peels or microneedling, which is why it suits more established scarring or sun damage, but also means more downtime.

What Recovery and Results Look Like

Expect visible redness, similar to a moderate sunburn, for 2 to 4 days, with some patients experiencing mild swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours, especially around the eyes if that area is treated. Tiny dark spots, sometimes called micro-crusting, may appear on the skin surface in the days after treatment, this is normal and part of the skin natural exfoliation process, and should not be picked at. Full recovery typically takes 5 to 7 days before makeup and normal skincare resume as usual. Results build over several weeks as new collagen forms, with visible improvement in texture, pigmentation, and fine lines continuing for up to 3 months after a single session. Most concerns need a course of 2 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for full results. Strict sun avoidance for at least 2 weeks after treatment is essential, since fractional laser significantly increases sun sensitivity, particularly relevant given the intensity of Maldives sun.

Guide FAQ

How much downtime should I plan for?

Expect to look visibly treated for several days; most patients plan this around a period with no major social events.

How many sessions are typical?

This depends on the concern's severity, discussed and planned at consultation rather than a fixed number for everyone.

Can I go out in the sun once healed?

Only with diligent, reapplied SPF; sun exposure during the healing window is the single biggest risk to how well results hold.

Is there a way to reduce downtime?

Treatment intensity can be adjusted to trade off downtime against speed of results; this is discussed and tailored at consultation.
