Dermal Filler Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid After Treatment

Key takeaways
- Good dermal filler aftercare in the first 24 to 48 hours – gentle handling, cool compresses and avoiding heat and hard exercise – helps swelling and bruising settle faster.
- Most swelling and bruising is mild and eases within a few days to two weeks, so the final result is best judged after about two weeks.
- Avoid saunas, hot tubs, tanning, strenuous workouts and alcohol for the first day or two, and postpone facials, peels, lasers and non-urgent dental work for around two weeks.
- In the Maldivian sun, daily broad-spectrum SPF and shade protect healing skin and help maintain your result.
- Severe or increasing pain, skin turning white or dusky, vision changes or signs of infection are not normal – seek medical help straight away.
Dermal filler aftercare is simply the set of small, sensible steps you take in the days after treatment to help the result settle smoothly and lower the risk of side effects. Fillers are minimally invasive, so most people return to daily life quickly, but the way you treat the area in the first hours and weeks genuinely influences how comfortable you feel and how natural the outcome looks. This guide explains what to do, what to avoid and when to seek help – with particular attention to living and healing in the Maldives.

Dermal filler aftercare in the first 24 to 48 hours
The first day or two of dermal filler aftercare matter most. Injected areas may feel a little tender, swollen or firm, and small bruises are common. This is expected and usually settles on its own.
Be gentle with the treated area
Try not to rub, press or massage the area unless we have specifically shown you a technique to use. Leaving the filler undisturbed while it integrates helps it stay where it was placed. When cleansing, use a light touch and a mild product rather than scrubbing.
Cool, do not heat
A clean, cool compress applied gently for short periods can ease swelling and comfort in the first 24 hours. Avoid direct heat – saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and very hot showers – for a day or two, as heat can worsen swelling.
Rest, sleep and posture
Where possible, keep your head slightly elevated and avoid lying flat immediately after treatment. Gentle movement is fine; save intense workouts for later.
What to avoid in the first two weeks
Good dermal filler aftercare in the first fortnight is largely about not disturbing the treated area. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and hot yoga can increase blood flow and make swelling or bruising more noticeable, so it is sensible to pause them for 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol and blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil, high-dose vitamin E and ginkgo can also add to bruising and are best avoided for a day or two around treatment. Skip tanning beds and prolonged direct sun in the first couple of days.
Other skin procedures – facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and laser or energy-based treatments – are usually postponed for around two weeks so the area is not disturbed while it settles. Non-urgent dental work is also worth delaying for a week or two where possible, because dental procedures and even some infections or vaccinations can occasionally trigger delayed swelling near filler.
Managing swelling and bruising
Sensible dermal filler aftercare makes these normal effects easier to ride out. Temporary swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and small lumps or bumps are the most common effects and are generally short-lived. Most facial swelling improves noticeably within the first three to five days, and by around two weeks the great majority has resolved – which is why we ask you to judge the final result at the two-week mark rather than on day one. Staying hydrated, sleeping well and avoiding alcohol all help. If small lumps remain, they often soften over time; let us know at your review and we can advise or gently address them.
Aftercare in the Maldivian sun and heat

Our climate deserves a special mention. Intense UV, heat and humidity are part of daily life here, and healing skin is more sensitive. For the first couple of weeks, protect the treated area with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, a wide-brimmed hat and shade during the middle of the day. Try to limit long periods in the sun, and be mindful of saunas, hot resort pools and steam rooms in the very early days, since heat can aggravate swelling. Good sun habits not only protect the healing area but also help preserve your skin quality and your result over time. Our wider advice on skincare in the Maldivian sun pairs well with filler aftercare.
Warning signs that need urgent attention
Serious problems are uncommon, but it is important to recognise them. The most concerning risk is filler accidentally entering a blood vessel, which reduces blood supply to the skin or, very rarely, affects the eye. Contact us or seek medical care immediately if you notice severe or increasing pain, skin that turns white, grey or dusky, blistering, any change in vision, a severe headache, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever. Getting checked early by a medical doctor gives the best outcome. Delayed swelling or firmness appearing weeks or months later – sometimes after an illness, vaccination or dental work – should also be reviewed rather than ignored.

Frequently asked questions
When can I exercise after dermal fillers?
Light activity is usually fine the same day, but hold off on strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and hot yoga for about 24 to 48 hours, as raised blood flow and heat can worsen swelling and bruising.
Can I wear make-up after filler?
It is best to let the tiny injection points close first. Many people wait until the next day before applying make-up, and then apply it gently. If you had a numbing product or there is any broken skin, give it a little longer.
How long until I see the final result?
Because swelling and minor bruising need time to settle, we suggest judging your result at around two weeks. If you would like a small adjustment, a review appointment after that point is the right time to discuss it.
Can I fly or dive soon after treatment?
Short flights are generally not a problem once any swelling is settling, but if you have travel or diving planned, tell us beforehand so we can time your treatment sensibly and advise you.
